Patterns
THE 2019/2020 VISITING ARTIST, SCHOLAR, + DESIGNER PROGRAM SERIES
The Patterns series explores the multifaceted and dynamic nature of repetition in contemporary art and culture. From DNA to data, ornamentation to textiles, and from history to habits, the universe is full of order derived from chaos. And as life becomes increasingly complicated, the power of predictable groupings and regimented, simple narratives grows increasingly alluring. Patterned organization can Provide solace in a complex world and can even crystallize a sense of divine perfection. But it can also reduce and simplify to a point of dangerous inaccuracy, eliciting false positives and mistaking correlation for causation. This series explores the human desire for symmetry, categorization, and repetitive alignment at a time when social and political progress simultaneously aims for a more nuanced and intersectional perspective.
