ABOUT THE lecture

Powerful patterns arise in large amounts of data. As the mass of digital information swells, we inch closer to fulfilling decades-old science fiction prophecies. Even the looping nature of time itself has been warped by industrial technology. With that eerie truth as a backdrop, Yuri Pattison uses installation, video, and sculpture to investigate the social ramifications of our networked age. Is our perception of contemporary infrastructure and reality shaped by a larger conspiracy? Join us to hear his creative interpretation in his talk, image circulation, pattern recognition. 

ABOUT THE lecturer

Yuri Pattison’s work explores the multiple relationships between visual cultures, space, communication technologies and the circulation of information. Born in Ireland, Pattison lives in London and has exhibited in countries around the world including Mexico, France, Germany, and Switzerland. He was the recipient of the prestigious Frieze Artist Award in 2016.

Taking advantage of the space outside the web, Pattison’s physical works explore the notions of open communication and boundaries in the modern workspace. He constructs and unearths complex narratives through data, archival sources, and historical fragments. Currently, Pattison is focused on time, advanced timing technologies, and the relationship between digital economies and colonial tendencies.

Recent solo exhibitions include crisis cast, Labor, Mexico (2019); context, collapse, mother’s tankstation, London; Trusted Traveller, Kunsthalle Sankt Gallen (both 2017) and user space, Chisenhale Gallery (2016).

RMCAD faculty, staff, and students are invited to join the VASD Program and artist Yuri Pattison for a casual Q+A session over lunch. This intimate gathering provides an opportunity to further discuss the ideas presented in the previous night’s artist talk and engage with our special guest. You are not required to pre-register for this event, and students who did not attend the artist talk are still encouraged to join in.

Studio Visits with Yuri Pattison

Get real-life feedback on your work from professional and accomplished artist Paul Pfeiffer! You’ll get new ideas, insights, and perspectives on finished projects or works-in-progress in this 30-minute, in-depth conversation. All RMCAD students are welcome to participate. You do not need to have a studio in Spivak to participate, and you do not need to work in the same medium as the artist. Perspectives from other areas of focus will help expand your creative practice.

To reserve a spot for this special opportunity RMCAD students are required to fill out the form at rmcad.edu/studiovisit by Wednesday, February 12, 2020. The VASD Program Committee will review submissions and selected students will be notified by Friday, February 14, 2020.
