JILL MAGID
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jill Magid’s artistic methods and in-depth projects take notice of systems of power and control and all of their inherent absurdity and opacity. Her performance-based practice involves extensive research into structures of authority, like intelligence agencies and the police, often intimately putting herself in relationships with individuals within these structures. To gain access to these people and organizations, her approach leverages the subtleties of seduction and institutional loopholes. Solo exhibitions of Jill’s work have taken place at the MUAC in Mexico City; the Tate Modern in London; the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York; and the Security and Intelligence Agency of the Netherlands. Her first feature-length film The Proposal, premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival and she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Creative Time Artist Commission, and the Calder Prize.
ABOUT THE ARTIST TALK
Tender: A Vocabulary
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2021
For her Attention Series artist talk, Jill discusses many of her provocative artworks from becoming intimately intertwined with the legacy of renowned Mexican architect Luis Barragán and culminating in her project titled Tender, which explores the complex relationship between currency and human value that began as an intervention into the US economy at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The project focuses on a small and easily dismissed financial symbol, the penny, in order to thoughtfully consider the price of touch, the cost of interconnectedness, and the value of care. Through Tender, and in the context of her other works, this talk investigates how a poetic gesture can expand and take on new, intriguing forms that pay attention to the human aspects, and perhaps vulnerabilities, of human-built systems.
