ABOUT THE LECTURE
The current ubiquity of technology in our daily lives increasingly reveals that virtual is real. Starting from the relationship between humans and new technologies, Cécile B. Evans’ work reflects on the value of emotions in contemporary society by exploring forms of human subjectivity and the systems that carry them, as well as the limits of both. Lecture: Feeling For You is an ongoing, frequently updated lecture that reverse engineers the artist’s practice through a series of personal anecdotes, research, images, audience reactions, and video clips. Meandering through the last few years of Evans’ work, the talk follows a similar ‘hyperlinked’ logic used in recent projects like Hyperlinks or It Didn’t Happen or AGNES. Touching on the rise of digital technology, the disorienting feedback loops it creates within society, and the historical relationship between humans and machines, Evans questions the last few years of her own work, including projects such as Sprung A Leak, What the Heart Wants, and Amos’ World.
ABOUT THE LECTURER
Evans explores the influence of new technologies on human feelings and behavior through sculpture, video and video installations, internet platforms, and performances. Starting with the relationship between human beings and machines, the artist focuses on the value of emotions in contemporary society, exploring today’s forms of human subjectivity, the representation of social roles, and the idea itself of the body and mortality.
Selected exhibitions of her work include Castello di Rivoli Turin, Tate Liverpool, and the Berlin Biennale. Evans is a Belgian-American and lives and works in London.
